Oscar-palkinnot on jaettu: voittajiin lukeutuu Dyyni ja väkivaltaiseksi ryhtynyt Will Smith

Gaala tullaan muistamaan välikohtauksesta, jossa Will Smith veti turpiin Chris Rockia. Rock esitti vitsin Smithin puolison Jada Pinkett Smithin hiuksista. Pinkett Smith on puhunut avoimesti hiustenlähdöstä, joten Rock iski vyön alle - ja Smith naamaan.

Osapuolten välillä on ollut kränää jo vuosien ajan. Rock vitsaili Pinkett Smithin kustannuksella myös silloin, kun Pinkett Smith ilmoitti boikotoivansa rasistisena pitämäänsä gaalaa.

Kun Smith palkittiin miespääosasta myöhemmin tässä gaalassa, hän tunteellisesti huomioi sen, että myös hänen roolihahmonsa on hulluna pidetty isä, joka tahtoo suojella perhettä.
